During the late 1980s, a group of Chinese Christians studying at Wayne State University were moved by God to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with their peers and kin. Their mission was to share the gospel to the Chinese in the area and they started the Wayne Chinese Bible Study Group.
About 17 years later, the co-workers in the Wayne Chinese Bible Study Group realized that God's plan was not limited to only bringing salvation to people, but also to make disciples who will follow Jesus Christ. With the support of the Detroit Chinese Alliance Church, the Wayne Chinese Bible Study Group was able to transition into the Wayne Chinese Alliance Church in August of 2003. The church provides a home full of God’s love for the Chinese living on the Wayne State University campus as well as downtown Detroit to share the gospel with them. At the same time, this church provides young brothers and sisters with adequate opportunities to grow and serve through the word of God in the church setting so that they will be nurtured into disciples of the Lord.
Since 2016, the number of Chinese international students and scholars at Wayne State University area has been decreasing every year while the number of Chinese young adults in the Metro Detroit area has been growing rapidly. After the church had sought and discerned God's leading, the church made the following two changes in May of 2019. First is to continue the focus on campus ministry, but to expand to other campuses outside of Wayne State University who are willing to partnership. Second is to expand the gospel and disciple-building ministry to young adults in the Metro Detroit area.
With the church's new direction, we decided to rename the church to Grace New Generation Alliance Church (GNGAC) on Easter of 2019. The new name inherits the Chinese characters "Wei En" (meaning great grace) from the original name to signify that the existence of the church is based on the great grace of God. The "new generation" empathizes the church ministry's focus on serving young adults.
